Structured Data for Manufacturing Websites: A Technical Guide

The Manufacturing Web Presence Problem

We reviewed 30 UK manufacturing websites. Twenty-seven had no structured data whatsoever. The three that did had only basic Organization schema. This sector-wide gap means that any manufacturer implementing comprehensive structured data gains an immediate competitive advantage in AI search visibility.

Which Schema Types to Implement

Manufacturing businesses should implement: Organization schema (headquarters, founding year, number of employees, areas served), Product schema for each product line or capability, Service schema for contract manufacturing and subcontracting offerings, and Place schema for each facility with geo-coordinates and operating hours.

Technical Specifications as Structured Data

Your technical capabilities are your differentiator. Encode them in structured data: materials processed (additionalProperty), tolerance ranges (additionalProperty), maximum part dimensions, batch size ranges, and lead times. This level of detail allows AI tools to match you precisely to procurement queries that include technical specifications.

Certification Markup

Use hasCredential or the qualifications property to mark up each certification. Include the certification name, issuing organisation, valid dates, and scope. AI tools use certification data as a primary filter — if your ISO 9001 is in structured data rather than just mentioned in body text, it's significantly more likely to be correctly identified and cited.

Implementation Priority

Start with Organization schema on your homepage, then add Product/Service schema to each capability page. Add certification markup next, then expand to facility and team pages. Most manufacturing websites can be fully marked up in two to three days. The ROI in terms of AI visibility is substantial and compounds over time.
