We ran an experiment at Pulse Creative. We asked ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews over 50 agency-related queries across different specialisms and locations. The results were revealing. AI tools consistently recommended agencies with three characteristics: deep vertical expertise evidenced by published content, comprehensive service descriptions with transparent process detail, and strong third-party signals from directories and review platforms.
What Gets You Recommended
AI tools aren't just searching for keywords. They're evaluating authority signals. Published case studies with measurable results carry more weight than generic 'we help brands grow' messaging. Detailed methodology content — explaining how you approach strategy, creative development, or media planning — signals genuine expertise. And consistent presence on platforms like Clutch, The Drum, and Google Business Profile gives AI tools the third-party validation they need to recommend with confidence.
What Gets You Excluded
Vague positioning is the biggest killer. Agencies that claim to do everything for everyone get recommended for nothing. AI tools match specific queries to specific capabilities. If your website says 'full-service digital agency' without detailing what that actually includes, you'll be passed over in favour of an agency with dedicated pages for SEO, PPC, content marketing, and social media management.
The Pulse Creative Experiment
After analysing our findings, we restructured our own website. We broke our services into 12 dedicated pages, added methodology sections to each, published six vertical-specific case studies, and implemented Organization and Service schema across the site. Within eight weeks, we started appearing in ChatGPT responses for Bristol-area marketing queries. The enquiries that followed were notably higher quality — prospects already understood our capabilities before making contact.
